IELTS Conversation Practice
Scenario: You booked a room online, but the hotel can't find your reservation. Talk to the receptionist.
Receptionist: Good afternoon. Welcome to Sunset Inn. May I have your name, please?
Formal: Good afternoon. My name is Maria Cruz. I booked a room online under that name.
Casual: Hi, yeah! I booked a room earlier. The name’s Maria Cruz.
Receptionist: I’m sorry, Ms. Cruz, but I can’t seem to find your reservation. Do you have a confirmation number?
Formal: Yes, I do. Let me check my email and give it to you in a moment.
Casual: Oh yeah, I have it here. Just a sec, I’ll get it from my phone.
Receptionist: Thank you. Unfortunately, we are fully booked tonight. Let me check with my manager to see what we can do.
Formal: I understand. I hope there’s an available solution, as I’ve already paid in advance.
Casual: Oh no, really? I hope you can help me out, 'cause I already paid for the room.
Receptionist: Thank you for your patience. We’ve found a room in a nearby partner hotel, and we’ll cover the cost. Would that be acceptable?
Formal: That sounds fair. Thank you for handling the situation professionally.
Casual: That works for me. Thanks a lot for sorting this out!
💬 Speaking Tips:
- Use polite language like “Would you mind…?”, “Could you please…?”, especially for formal situations.
- Keep your answers clear and confident — imagine it’s a real-life conversation.
- Try to vary your sentence structure. Avoid repeating “I think…” or “I want…” too often.
